In January 1976, a team of eleven divers and support personnel conducted the first recorded diving exploration of the Bowen Sump in the Organ-Hedricks Cave System in West Virginia. The grueling expedition required the team to transport 120 pounds of diving equipment two miles into the cave, culminating in a 135-foot rappel into the Bowen Room.

Forrest Wilson executed the primary dives into the muddy, low-visibility sump. Navigating a horseshoe-shaped passage and carefully extending his safety line, Wilson achieved a maximum penetration of 77 feet. He reported that the passage was approximately three feet high and very wide, eventually trending upward into a layer of clear water. This critical observation suggested the potential for significant further extension of the historic cave system.
